Q: Why did you start your business?
A: I started my company, B&K Painting, because I wanted to be able to control my own destiny when it came to providing for my family. I wanted a career where I would get rewarded and compensated for all the work I put into the job. I started The Idaho Painter on YouTube to help market and promote B&K Painting, and to teach my customers how to paint in order to save them money and give them the satisfaction of doing the job themselves.
Q: What are some key factors or decisions that contributed to the success of your business?
A: The main factors that contributed to the success in my business include a love and passion for what I do and a willingness to put forth the necessary hard work and effort to make the company succeed.
To own your own business, you have to be willing to work long hours and have a drive to succeed. In today's business world you will never become successful unless you master social media. Its free advertising and should become your best friend. A webpage, Facebook page, and optimized SEO are an absolute minimum.
You have to be willing to learn, promote, market, work hard, put in long hours, and believe. There is so many opportunities and avenues to help you succeed including free community education classes, free advertising such as Craigslist, and social media marketing. To be successful, I made a commitment to offer the best customer service and to provide a high quality paint job at an affordable price. If you do this with honesty and integrity you will succeed.
My YouTube channel has become successful because I have put in long, hard hours, I have continued to learn, and I produce videos on a subject I love.
I enjoy what I do for a living, I Iove messing around on computers and learning software and programs, and I love teaching anyone who will listen my painting secrets.
Q: What are some challenging aspects of your business?
A: The most challenging part of owning my own business has been finding quality employees. Employees who share the same passion, are honest, and are people of integrity are the people I look for.
With my YouTube channel, it has been a challenge to take time to step away from the computer. I have so much I want to teach and share that I often stay up till 3 AM because I do not want to stop making videos.
Q: Do you feel you made any serious mistakes as you were starting or growing your business? Knowing what you know now, what would you have done differently?
A: I did make the mistake of not being willing to ask questions to those who knew way more than I did. Many painters are willing to share tips if you are willing to ask questions. Don't be shy, ask! With what I know now, I would have tried to learn more by asking questions instead of by trial and error. I ruined a lot of trim and doors learning on my own instead of seeking the help of those with more knowledge than me. YouTube solves that problem now. Because of YouTube, anyone can learn about anything that interest them, with over 500,000,000 channels out there. If you want to learn how to paint, I can teach you anything you want to know on my channel.
Q: What other advice or words of inspiration would you like to share?
A: I have about nine years of college education and I have become very successful doing a job you do not need a high school education to do. My college education has played a part in my success, but it has mostly been my passion for making people happy and making something ugly look beautiful. My faith in God has kept me honest and driven me to be a business owner with integrity. Have faith and work hard, and you will succeed, too.
