Q: Why did you start your business?
A: I started Best Life to help seniors in our community put the spark back in their life at the moment when they are at risk of losing their independence. Too often, seniors living with multiple chronic conditions are forced unwillingly to move into expensive retirement communities. This robs seniors of their lifestyle and their home environment and unfortunately deprives our neighborhoods of their presence, wisdom, and experience. The answer is to help seniors manage their health challenges by introducing wellness techniques so that they can remain healthy, happy, and home for as long as possible.
The other reason I founded Best Life was for our workers. Too often, senior home care is a minimum wage job with no perks and little stability. As anyone who has a loved one in need of home care knows, the job is too difficult and too important to pay minimum wage. What's more, we need more home care workers to serve America's aging population, and not enough people are interested in applying. We have expanded the role of our home care workers, who serve as Wellness Attendants, we offer them more supervision, training, and support, and we pay our people a living wage. This makes a huge difference not only in their lives, but in the quality of care that we can provide for our clients.
Q: What are some key factors or decisions that contributed to the success of your business?
A: From the beginning, we set out to solve problems, not to start a business. Clients don't call us because they want home care, they call us because they are having trouble remaining independent. Always remember what problem you have set out to solve for your customers.
Q: What are some challenging aspects of your business?
A: Every client and every family who we work with is in a unique situation that requires individualized, concierge level service. We overcome that challenge by hiring excellent case managers to oversee our caregivers and provide input and support to our care plans. This added layer of management allows us to make progress towards our clients' goals over time.
Q: Do you feel you made any serious mistakes as you were starting or growing your business? Knowing what you know now, what would you have done differently?
A: Start as quickly as you can! It's easy to get lost in the minutia of starting a business and spend weeks comparing different merchant vendors and A/B testing your web domain. Get to your customers quickly and sort out your office furniture as you go.
Q: What other advice or words of inspiration would you like to share?
A: There is much work to be done preparing "old" business models for the new economy. Not every business needs to be a flashy tech startup. Figure out how to create a better version of something that already exists, one that provides greater value for your customers, workers, and community, and you'll have a hit on your hands.
