Creating Your Law Firm Logo

Opening your own law firm is a huge step in your career. After working your way through many years of school to become licensed as a lawyer, you then have to find clients to represent and carve out a niche for yourself in this crowded field. If you are thinking of starting your own firm in the near future, consider designing a professional logo that can be used as a reliable marketing asset.

Designing a logo might not be your strength, but it can actually be easier than you imagined. We’ll help you get started by looking at some examples that are currently in use by other firms. Bring a little bit of your own creativity to this project, along with the advice you pick up from this article, and a quality logo could be right around the corner.

Smart Colors to Pick for a Law Firm Logo

Professionalism is the name of the game when picking colors for your law firm logo. You don’t want potential clients to think your firm falls short of the experience and knowledge that they require. Most clients will want a lawyer to exude confidence, so choose colors that feel confident and strong.

As a starting point, we’d like to look at three example logos from current law firms for inspiration.

  • Perkins Coie. This logo uses red and black to create its design.
  • Summit Law Group. Yellow and a muted shade of blue/gray are used in this logo.
  • Stoel Rives. A combination of gray and blue are used in this design, along with a white accent.

Not surprisingly, we don’t see any colors here that could be viewed as soft or immature. Yellow is the brightest shade of the bunch, and it is used strategically to represent the sun.

Also, in addition to only sticking with strong tones, none of these designs use more than a couple of colors in any prominent role. That’s a smart strategy that leads to a cleaner logo. If you clutter up your design with too many different colors, you might wind up taking away from the professional image that you are trying to create.

Finding Symbols and Icons for a Law Firm Logo Design

As a law firm, there are nearly endless possibilities for symbols and icons that you could use in your design. You could take a direct approach and use symbols that represent things closely related to legal practice, like maybe a courthouse, gavel, or large books. Any of those kinds of things would be logical and would tie into what you offer clients.

It’s worth noting that none of our three example law firms went in this direction. For Perkins Coie, the logo is simply the name of the business with the first word in red and the second word in black. This is a very minimalist logo, but it is professional, and the contrasting colors effectively draw your eye.

Our other two sample logos appeal to their local market with the symbols they have chosen. These are Seattle-area law firms, and they’ve designed logos that speak to the beautiful natural environment around Seattle. Summit Law Group uses a drawing that features the sun rising over a mountain, while Stoel Rives has a winding river through a blue circle. If you don’t want to go with direct imagery related to law, using something that speaks to your local touch is a wise move.

Selecting Fonts to Use in a Law Firm Logo

On this last point, we are going to stick with the theme of professionalism and a minimal design. You don’t want to pick a font that could be seen as too casual, and you certainly don’t want anything that’s hard to read. All three of our samples use a sans-serif font with clean, thin lines, and we would recommend that you choose something similar.

For any law firm, success is determined by the outcome of their cases, not the quality of their logo. With that said, designing a good logo is a nice starting point as you try to attract clients and build your practice. Your new logo will be seen in a variety of places, such as on your website and on business cards, so it’s worth putting in the time and effort needed to create something respectable.

Things to Consider When Picking a Logo

It's best to brand your company with a logo that includes symbols, icons, colors, and fonts that clearly represent what you’re selling to your customers. Luckily, TRUiC's Free Logo Generator offers a large variety of options for all kinds of styles and branding options.

Color Psychology - Colors can help define the mood of your venture. Consider which color scheme will best represent your law firm when using the color editor and creating your company brand with our logo maker.

Accessibility - When it comes to creating an accessible design, the font you choose should be easy for customers to recognize, and color contrast is vital for readability.

Icons vs. symbols to make your own logo design - Symbols can help to represent your business, like products you sell or the type and quality of service you offer.

For example, a logo for a CBD oil shop could be depicted as a leaf; the symbolism being that it’s earthy, organic, natural, or all of these.

Font style - Choosing the right font is important since fonts capture the attention of customers and show what they can expect from your company.

If you own a more formal business, such as an accounting firm, you’ll likely want to choose a font that is more minimalistic and professional. If you’re opening a company such as a toy store, you’ll probably want to choose a font that is more fun and whimsical.
