As the only Jewish organization that provides direct assistance to the United States in times of natural disaster, NECHAMA – Jewish Response to Disaster offers hope and care to victims of tragedies. Commonly shortened to NECHAMA — Hebrew for “to comfort” — this organization welcomes volunteers of all faiths to assist with tasks like rebuilding homes, clearing debris, providing medical attention, and dispersing food or other supplies to victims. NECHAMA also collects donations of both money and supplies, which it uses to help victims get back on their feet and ensure its volunteers have the resources they need to properly help them.
Star Legacy Foundation
While women can’t always prevent complications associated with childbirth, expectant mothers can take some steps to significantly lower their chances of experiencing a stillbirth. The Star Legacy Foundation believes that 26,000 stillbirths each year can be avoided with proper care and access to educational resources. Each year, the foundation releases updated information on prenatal care and stillbirths to arm soon-to-be parents with information that can save their unborn child’s life. For those who unfortunately lose a child, this nonprofit provides emotional support via counseling, advocacy groups, and a support line staffed by grief counselors with experience in infant loss.
Affirmation: LGBTQ Mormons, Families & Friends
Members of the LGBTQIA+ community may feel excluded from parts of society — especially certain religious sects. This nonprofit is an organization of Mormons who’re happy to accept people of any gender or orientation into their fold. It hopes to set an example for other religious groups to include rather than exclude people as the Bible teaches.
