Utah Nonprofits

Many Utah nonprofits focus on preventing animal abuse, providing international humanitarian aid, and stopping human trafficking. See below for three nonprofits that address these issues within the state.

Best Friends Animal Society

Each year, thousands of abandoned pets die due to exposure, lack of food, or euthanasia in shelters or pounds across the United States. Best Friends Animal Society seeks a world in which no pets are left homeless or needlessly killed. Unfortunately, US animal shelters killed more than 355,000 dogs and cats in 2021 so this nonprofit’s goal is to make all shelters “no-kill” facilities by 2025. In addition to spreading information about the treatment of animals and how to adopt and properly care for pets, Best Friends Animal Society also gives up to 1,600 animals housing, food, and care so they’re healthy and ready to find a new home via the organization’s extensive adoption network.

Youthlinc

Founded in Salt Lake City, this organization helps young people find humanitarian efforts and projects so they can give back to the world. Youthlinc has several programs that serve both domestic and international needs, allowing high school and college students to support issues they care about while building their leadership skills. Each year, this nonprofit offers $32,000 in scholarships, works in 10 international sites to assist villages in need, and provides more than 8,000 volunteer hours to local areas to keep Salt Lake City’s food banks and shelters operating at peak condition.

Operation Underground Railroad

Human trafficking is an unfortunate reality across the globe with thousands of people being moved and sold in secret. Operation Underground Railroad has fought back against human trafficking since 2013 by assisting in the rescue of more than 6,000 people and contributing to the arrest of more than 4,000 predators. This nonprofit operates across 40 countries, including the United States and all of Africa. It not only provides support and care to survivors of human trafficking, but also uses its wide network to assist law enforcement officials with the arrest of predators and the return of individuals taken against their will.
