Q&A

Q: Why did you start your business?

A: I’ve worked here since 1978 after years of collecting and selling records on my own. I also worked as the music director at a college radio station. In 1996 I purchased Wazoo records from my boss.

Q: What are some key factors or decisions that contributed to the success of your business?

A: I knew what customers were looking for and I knew how to properly price records. I also focused a lot on customer service. Additionally, being located in downtown Ann Arbor was a huge contributor to Wazoo Records’ success.

Q: What are some challenging aspects of your business?

A: It’s hard to sell physical records in the digital age.

Q: Do you feel you made any serious mistakes as you were starting or growing your business? Knowing what you know now, what would you have done differently?

A: In the past I have hired too many employees, spending more money on salaries than necessary. I have also invested in fruitless advertising.

Q: What other advice or words of inspiration would you like to share?

A: Each minute that goes by is gone forever. Don’t spend time doing things you don’t love, regardless of the money involved.
