5 BEST SMALL BUSINESS CREDIT CARDS FOR EARNING CASH BACK

Building a business is stressful and all-consuming. You can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars a year with a small business credit card, but you might not have the time to make sure you’re getting the most out of each card.

Do the office supply perks of one card mean more to you than the travel rewards of another? Is it worth it to pay an annual fee for premium benefits instead of choosing a credit card with without one?

Cash back cards can simplify this equation while still saving you significant money. Below are the best small business credit cards for the most cash back benefits.

1. CAPITAL ONE SPARK CASH FOR BUSINESS

Ideal for: Business owners who want the highest rewards for the least amount of effort, and who don’t mind an annual fee.

Talk about straightforward: You earn 2% cash back on all purchasesand without any spending caps. There’s also a nice early spend bonus that eclipses the $95 annual fee that kicks in the second year.

REWARDS AND BENEFITS (TERMS APPLY)

  • Early spend bonus of $500 after you spend $4,500 within three months of opening an account.
  • 2% cash back on all purchases.
  • Free employee cards.
  • Quarterly and annual spending reports.

FEES

  • Waived annual fee for the first year, then $95.
  • No balance transfer fee.
  • No foreign transaction fee.
  • 3% or $10 cash advance fee (whichever is greater per transaction).

2. AMERICAN EXPRESS SIMPLYCASH PLUS BUSINESS

Ideal for: Small business owners who don’t mind taking some time to rack up big savings and don’t travel overseas.

You earn 5% cash back at U.S. office supply stores and on wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. service providers. But the cap is doubledfrom $25,000 to $50,000.

That $50,000 cap in annual spending is figured each calendar year. Once you hit that limit, your rewards tumble to 1%. The card also comes with 0% intro APR on purchases for the first 9 months.

At 2.7%, this card has the second-highest foreign transaction fee on this list. That means you’ll pay a surcharge if your purchase has to go through a foreign bank. Savvy cardholders know to avoid traveling with any card saddled with this fee because you get nothing in exchange for it.

REWARDS AND BENEFITS (TERMS APPLY)

  • 0% intro APR on purchases for 9 months.
  • 5% cash back on office supplies and telephone services for $50,000, then 1%.
  • 3% cash back for $50,000 (then 1%) on the category of your choice, including hotel rooms, airfare, restaurants, shipping, etc.
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases.

FEES

  • No annual fee.
  • No balance transfer fee.
  • No cash advance fee.
  • 2.7% foreign transaction fee.

3. CHASE INK BUSINESS UNLIMITED

Ideal for: Owners of smaller companies who don’t travel overseas.

This card is up there with the Capital One Spark Cash when it comes to cash rewards. That’s because you get 1.5% cash back on all purchases – and your rewards earnings are uncapped. It’s most valuable for companies that spend less than $19,000 annually. If your business spends more than that, you may want to go with the Capital One Spark Cash, which offers more perks above that level.

Also, this card has the highest foreign transaction fee on this list. As mentioned before, this fee offers you nothing in return. Unlike, say, cards with an annual fee that offset it with extra perks, foreign transaction fees offer no such thing.

REWARDS AND BENEFITS (TERMS APPLY)

  • $500 bonus cash back after spending $3,000 in the first three months.
  • 0% intro APR on purchases for the first 12 months.
  • 1.5% cash back on all purchases.
  • Employee cards at no additional costs.
  • Primary car rental insurance: You’re covered first before filing a claim with your insurance company.
  • Purchase protection: coverage against damage and theft for 120 days—up to $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per calendar year.
  • Extended warranty. Add a year to warranties of three years or less.
  • Lost Luggage. Coverage of up to $3,000 per person, with a separate limit of $500 per person for jewelry, cameras, and electronics.
  • Travel accident insurance. Up to $500,000 in coverage per insured person.

FEES

  • No annual fee.
  • 5% or $5 balance transfer fee (whichever is greater per transaction).
  • 5% or $15 cash advance fee (whichever is greater per transaction).
  • 3% foreign transaction fee.

4. US BANK BUSINESS LEVERAGE VISA SIGNATURE

Ideal for: Business owners whose expenses cover many categories but don’t travel overseas.

This card offers an extra point per dollar on up to $100,000 in spending. Another unique rewards incentive with this card is how they’re offered to you.

You earn 2x points per dollar spent in the top two categories that you spend the most on every month. This is a great perk due to the fact you can customize your rewards based on your monthly business expenses. There are 48 categories, including many popular ones for business owners, from office supplies to even direct marketing. But it also includes some esoteric ones, such as funeral services, veterinarians, and bail bonds.

As mentioned above, this card comes with a foreign transaction fee that charges you for purchases going through foreign banks. So avoid using it outside the country.

REWARDS AND BENEFITS (TERMS APPLY)

  • Free employee cards that earn up to $1,000 in bonus rewards in the first year.
  • 2x per dollar spent in your top two purchasing categories.
  • 1x point per dollar spent in all other purchases.
  • Points are worth 1 cent each toward cash back, travel, gift cards, or merchandise.

FEES

  • Waived annual fee for the first year, then $95 every year after.
  • 5% or $5 intro balance transfer fee, then 3% or $3 (whichever is greater per transaction).
  • 5% or $15 cash advance fee (whichever is greater per transaction).
  • 2% foreign transaction fee in USD, 3% foreign transaction fee in foreign currencies.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST CASH BACK CARD FOR YOU

While small business cards that focus on cash back can make your life simpler, you still have some homework to do if you want to extract the most out of them.

That’s because not all cash back rewards are created equal. Some give higher percentages for certain categories, and others come with fees that might cancel out the benefits, depending on how your business is built and how much you travel (think annual fees and foreign transaction fees).

Once you do the rudimentary math, a cash back card can be the easiest way to reap rewards without having to constantly think about it.
