Choosing a domain name could be one of the most important steps in building your brand or business.
Your domain name is often one of the first things that someone sees about your brand and has an effect on their impression of your website and your overall brand as well. A carefully chosen domain name can increase your user interest and drive traffic, while a carelessly chosen one might do the opposite.
Here’s our top five tips for choosing a domain name for your small business.

In the last video, we covered how your company name affects your branding efforts. In this video, we’ll cover how to choose your domain name well. You need to be prepared when you’re ready to purchase a domain, and your top domain name may not be available. We recommend coming up with a list of 5 to 10 ranked domain names before sitting down to purchase one.
In this video, we’re going to cover how to create a list of ideal domain names for your business. Your domain name is a key element of your website. It can make or break you, so it’s crucial to choose a domain name that works for your business. Here’s three reasons why having a solid domain name is important.
It’s your first impression — your URL is the first thing that your visitors will see. A good domain name can make a positive and lasting impression, while a bad domain name can send visitors running.
It affects SEO — while exact match domains are no longer a necessity, keywords in your domain name can still help your SEO rankings.
It defines your brand — we’ll talk about this in a minute, but your domain name is a branding opportunity. The right domain name can increase your brand recognition. With your domain being such an important part of your brand, we’ve created a list of our top five domain tips. Let’s dive into them.
Tip number one: use a .com extension. If you have a domain that you’re in love with that does not have a .com extension available but is available with an extension like .biz or a weird one like .pizza, our recommendation would be to move to the next domain name on your list and stick with the .com extension. It’s the most familiar to people on the internet, it builds trust in your brand, and it’s the easiest to remember.
Tip number two: shorter is better. According to Google, when it comes to domain names, less is more. Try to keep your domain to two to three words. Most likely, the shorter domain names were taken a long time ago and are currently sold for thousands of dollars. If you can’t find something short, make it brandable.
Tip number three: avoid hyphens and numbers. Remember how your domain name should be easy to spell and pronounce? Hyphens in numbers make it more difficult. Imagine explaining Facebook’s domain if it had a hyphen in there. “Have you seen this new site Facebook? There’s a hyphen in there, by the way, in between the face and the book.” Facebook might not have spread so quickly if that was the case.
Bottom line, your domain name should be smooth and punchy. Hyphens numbers get in the way of that. Stick to the letters.
Tip number four: consider using nice keywords that reflect your website. Having keywords in your domain can help your SEO, but tread carefully here. If you try to awkwardly stuff keywords into your domain, it can come across as generic. If you’re able to put in keywords, It’s helpful to have them at the beginning of your domain, which is where they’ll be most powerful for your SEO ranking. Think of this tip as a bonus if you can work it in, but don’t feel that it’s a must.
Tip number five: consider revising the official name of your business when you purchase your domain, if at all possible. It makes everything easier when your business name matches your domain. It’s certainly not a must, but it’s nice. The TRUiC Free Online Business Name Generator is one of the most advanced AI tools to create a name for your company, brand, or business. It’s a great companion for brainstorming business name ideas that would appeal to your customers.
When we cover actually purchasing a domain from GoDaddy.com later in the course, consider officially making your business name what you actually land on for your domain name. This tip, again, is a bonus if you can make it work, but don’t feel that it’s a must.
