KEY CONSIDERATIONS: ROCKET LAWYER VS. LEGALZOOM

Although this matchup was almost a tie, LegalZoom beat out Rocket Lawyer by a small margin. Both services offer useful features to help you form your LLC at a moderate cost. LegalZoom's customer service model ended up being more well-developed between the two.

Let’s break down their features by answering three simple questions.

Is Either a Good Deal?

With millions of customers, Rocket Lawyer and LegalZoom are both established services with some affordable features. However, both services do not offer a free registered agent service for the first year, like other companies.

Overall, LegalZoom is one of the more expensive online business formation services. Rocket Lawyer is great at helping customers start their LLCs while saving money on legal fees.

Who Uses Rocket Lawyer and LegalZoom?

Entrepreneurs who need help forming an LLC, corporation, non-profit, and so forth use these platforms. Rocket Lawyer and LegalZoom are both more focused on full legal services for business beyond just company formation.

Here are some verified reviews (pulled from Trustpilot and Sitejabber) by people who used Rocket Lawyer or LegalZoom to help launch their businesses:

I have tried other Legal Document websites in the past and found them difficult. However Rocket Lawyer was easy to understand, and gave me the document I needed without going through a lot of searching. I highly recommend Rocket Lawyer, and will definitely use them again if needed.”

I was recommended by a colleague to contact Legal Zoom to set up my LLC. I will note the process was a smooth, efficient and a pleasure.

Is There a Better Deal to Form My LLC?

The short answer is, yes, there are many other options to form your LLC in a cheaper, faster, and similarly reliable way.

Takeaway

Based on the questions above, Rocket Lawyer is a good choice if you want ongoing legal services past LLC formation. This platform is also ideal for new business owners who don’t have a lot of background forming contracts.

Consider LegalZoom if you want a more experienced company with higher brand recognition, and are willing to pay premium prices.

We further analyzed what you should keep in mind before making your choice. We’ve separated these points into four topics which are outlined below.

Rocket Lawyer vs Legalzoom Overview
Rocket Lawyer Legalzoom
Overall 3.3/5 3.4/5

Ease of Use 4/5 3.7/5

Customer Service

LegalZoom offers a better customer service experience.

Every time we called LegalZoom, we were able to talk to their service department for help quickly. Every chat request for more information we sent to Rocket Lawyer redirected us to call in. Every call to Rocket Lawyer's hotline connected us with their sales department. The sales rep was more interested in closing a sale than helping decide if their services were even a good fit. This type of policy favors the company's bottom line over the interests of their customers. For this reason, we found LegalZoom’s approach to customer service more valuable.

Included Features

Rocket Lawyer offers unlimited access to its library of legal templates.

You can get documents through this resource that most other services charge for. We obtained both an operating agreement and banking resolution during our free trial. However, compared to LegalZoom's one-time service fee, Rocket Lawyer is more expensive over time for users who only want to form an LLC.

Rocket Lawyer excels at offering affordable, ongoing legal advice from licensed professionals.

For 39.99/month, their subscription model gives you access to consultations with Rocket Lawyer’s national lawyer network, unlimited legal documents, and discounted filings. While expensive, this ongoing support can make a big difference for your new business. There is a $99 formation option for non-members, though obtaining an EIN and registered agent service will cost you $60 and $149/year respectively. Still, their legal support infrastructure is what really sets Rocket Lawyer apart.

Ease of Use

Both companies are equally easy-to-use when it comes to the formation process.

On LegalZoom, the entire ordering process should take no longer than 15-20 minutes. If for any reason you are unable to complete an order in one sitting, they will email a link to your saved answers, giving you the option of completing your order at a later time.

Rocket Lawyer’s user interface is very friendly. You can manage your LLC formation paperwork and other necessary legal documents at a glance.

Value

Rocket Lawyer may let you file your LLC during its free trial period.

Unless your state takes longer than 7 days to process your paperwork, you can actually file your LLC during your 7 day free trial with Rocket Lawyer. They filed our LLC in Michigan and charged only the state processing fees. We certainly recommend trying this, especially if you’re planning to act as your own registered agent anyway.
